PRESS RELEASE

JANUARY 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Newark International Film Festival Officially Open for Its Second Year

Newark, NJ – Newark is no stranger to the world of blockbuster film, stellar entertainment and vibrant culture. September of 2016 saw an inspiring culmination of all three during the premiere of the inaugural Newark International Film Festival and it did not disappoint.

An ambitious endeavor birthed in the mind of its founder Kenneth Gifford, the festival consists of three main components – screenings, celebrity driven panels and Q&A’s and interactive workshops and exhibitions for filmmakers, industry insiders and spectators alike. Mr. Gifford voiced his gratitude for the first year along with his hopes for year two.

“Our goal for the festival mirrors our mission – we want to revolutionize the film experience for film lovers and we wanted to do it in Newark. Last years’ experience rivaled our expectations and the bar is even higher for our second year. We were truly humbled by the participation and spirit of collaboration in the city and are really looking forward to even more dynamic partnerships this year.”

A standout in its first lap to the festival circuit, the NEWARKIFF’s unique approach to catering to its filmmakers and festival goers has already made it a darling amongst festival elitists and film insiders around the world.

“We screened our film Ekaj at the 2016 NewarkIFF and we have to say that they really went out of their way for their inaugural event this year…” Cati and Mike Gonzalez, Filmmakers.

This year promises to be an even more illustrious and immersive event with the founding team working harder with an earlier start. January 12th saw the official opening of submissions for the film festival and they are already representative of two countries. Newly minted Executive Director Leslie Peters says the excitement for the festival’s second year is palpable.

“I am excited that the NIFF will be celebrating its second year in the City of Newark, New Jersey in September 2017! It is with sincere and humble honor that I have accepted the role of Executive Director and I endeavor to continue to introduce to the world the finer talents, history, and cultivation the people of the city possess.”

The Newark International Film Festival saw over 800 submissions from 70 countries in 2016. Between target marketing and strategic metrics, the staff is confident a groundswell will happen early and be consistent leading up to their early admissions date.

The Newark International Film Festival will hold an official press conference in conjunction with the city of Newark and Mayor Ras Baraka at Newark City Hall to officially kick off this year’s festival on January 26th at 1:30 PM. A reception will follow at Taste Venue from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend both events.

2016 Newark International Film Festival Gears Up For September Debut

Newark, NJ – After making its official announcement in January, the 2016 Newark International Film Festival (Newark IFF) has been building buzz around the world and gearing up for its debut September 9-11th.  Astoundingly, over 800 films across various genres were submitted from over 50 countries around the world.  The 2016 Newark International Film Festival is set to bring thousands of filmmakers and festival goeers to Newark, NJ – the birthplace of film – to showcase an array of film-focused events including screenings, workshops, celebrity Q&A panels, and more.

The Newark IFF is the first international film festival hosted in Newark. A main feature of the Newark IFF will be the Hannibal Goodwin Award for Innovation in Filmmaking in homage to Hannibal Goodwin, the Episcopal priest who invented celluloid film 1887 in Newark, NJ.  A core component to the Newark IFF are the various workshops, celebrity Q&A panels, and receptions that will provide access and platforms for filmmakers from all over to take advantage of the wealth of experience, resources, and opportunities available to them.

Among the scheduled events for the three-day weekend, the 2016 Newark IFF will include Let’s Laugh (Newark) Comedy Showcase Presented by Bob Sumner and the “Filmed In Newark” Scavenger Hunt that will lead participants throughout downtown Newark on a quest to find landmarks and locations that have significance in the film industry or have been filming locations for major motion pictures.

“Newark has historically had great significance on the national and international stage, particularly in the area of innovation,” said Tehsuan Glover, Newark IFF Director of Communications.  “It is especially poetic that we bring this international film festival here to Newark to showcase the fact that Newark is an international city, and that Newark has so much to offer for Newarkers as well as international filmmakers, actors, entertainers, and tourists.”

Newark IFF passes and hotel accommodations are available in advance online via the newarkiff.com website.  Festival passes are available starting at only $50.  All Access VIP passes are available in limited supply for $150.
